How to Get a Motorcycle License in Michigan

New Michigan Residents

The state requires new residents who are licensed to drive a motorcycle in another state to obtain a Michigan driver’s license as soon as possible. Drivers can get a new license and a motorcycle endorsement (CY endorsement) by going to their local Secretary of State office. In addition to presenting their existing out-of-state license, drivers will need to have proof of their Social Security number, U.S. citizenship, and Michigan residency. They will need to undergo a vision screening and pass the written and on-cycle skills exam to receive a CY endorsement.

Temporary Instruction Permit

New motorcycle drivers have to obtain a learner’s license called the Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP). This allows new riders 16 and older to ride with the supervision of a licensed motorcyclist who is over 18. It prohibits nighttime riding and riding with passengers. To obtain a TIP, riders will need to have a valid Michigan license, pay the $16 license fee, undergo a vision screening, and pass a written exam. Riders under 18 will also need to take a safety training course. A TIP is valid for 180 days.

CY Motorcycle Endorsement

Once new riders have gained some experience and are comfortable being on the road, they can apply for a CY endorsement. This involves paying a $16 license fee, passing a written exam, and demonstrating those newly-honed riding skills. This can be done either by passing a riding test given by a state-approved testing organization or bringing proof of completion of a state-approved motorcycle safety course. Riders under 18 must hold a level 2 or level 3 graduated license before obtaining the CY endorsement. They’ll be required to pay the fee, pass the written exam, and present the certificate of completion from their motorcycle safety course.
